1. What is a bit and what does it mean to say that "it's all just bits"? (Koan 1) Give examples of the things today that are stored in bits? Everything on a computer is nothing more than bits arranged in a pattern that we cannot see. The computer does not actually recognize information the way that we do. Pictures, documents, phone calls, videos, calculations, etc. are all just different arrangements of bits.
2. Describe, in your own words, Moore's Law. Moore's Law stated that the density of microchips was increasing at an exponential rate every couple of years.
3. Someone offers you a summer job and offers you two pay rates: (1) $10 per hour for 40 hours per week for 30 days or (2) One cent on day 1, two cents and day two, four cents on day three and on (doubling each day) for 30 days. If you were trying to make as much money as possible in 30 days, which pay rate would you choose? What does this illustrate? I would take option 2. I've seen this before and I know you would make over $10 million. This illustrates that exponential growth always surpasses incremental growth.
4. Give an example of how the digital explosion is "neither good nor bad" but has both positive and negative implications. The digital explosion is such a incredible thing, it allows us to find lost people through satellite locations, however, it also provides a long distance communication between terrorists.
5. "Advances in computing have generated and increased creativity in other fields." Comment on this statement. Do you agree? Can you give an example to support (or contradict) it? With the advancements of technology and computers, many other fields have been able advance themselves. I believe that computers have truly changed so many industries. It has allowed many businesses to expand advertising by using social media. It had helped manufacturing become much easier. Computer advancements have definitely helped other fields.
