1. Why should all Internet users be aware of copyrighted material? Internet users should be aware of copyrighted material because if the material is used in certain ways, the owner of the material can sue for copyright infringement.
2. What is a GB? How many bytes are in GB? A GB is a gigabyte and it is made up of 1 billion bytes.
3. What is the NET Act and what is its significance in the history of copyright? The NET Act (No Electronic Theft Act) is significant to the history of copyright because it made it illegal to steal or duplicate digital content.
4. What is a peer-to-peer architecture? Provide an example of at least one well-known peer-to-peer network. In peer-to-peer architecture, rather than getting files from a central place, a centralized network provides information and gives out the location of that file on other computers. 5. What is the DMCA and why is it significant to copyright? DMCA is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It prohibits the use of technology that's purpose is to avoid copyright laws. 6. What are Open Access and Creative Commons? How have they impacted the sharing of digital information? Open Access networks are networks that allow users to share material with other users, but it is limited to the network. Creative Commons gives out licenses to creators, allowing them to share their material with others.
7. Before reading this chapter, were you aware of copyright infringement? When you put digital content (e.g. images, videos) in your apps, where did you get it from? Is it possible that you violated any copyright terms? Has the reading raised your awareness of how you use content found on the Internet? I have been aware of copyright infringement for a while. When I put pictures into things such as Powerpoints or other projects, I often get the images from Google Images, however I do not cite them, therefore I have broken copyright restrictions. They're images publicly posted on the Internet and I do not claim the images to be my own, thus I do not think it's much of an issue. 8. In your opinion, are YouTube users violating copyright terms when they make lyric videos? Why or why not? Youtube lyric videos violate copyright terms when the videos are monetized, but otherwise there is no issue. 9. In your opinion, are computers that use DRAM violating copyright terms? Why or why not? I do not think they are because computers need to copy data to run discs.
10. Select one of the technical innovations described in the chapter and write an explanation of the technical details of this innovation. Try to use terms that someone unfamiliar with the innovation would understand. One technological innovation was the peer-to-peer architecture network, Napster. Napster was a music sharing network where you could share music with other users through a centralized network.
